What is Azure Information Protection?
Microsoft's Azure Information Protection (AIP) is a subscription-based cloud service that helps businesses categorize, discover, classify, and secure their electronic records by applying labels to documents and emails. AIP is a component of Microsoft's overarching Information Protection (MIP) system.
To give encryption protection to outgoing communication, you can utilize AIP from within Office 365. Documents written using Office products such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint are protected by this solution. AIP safeguards electronic records on your computer or in the cloud.
How Does Azure Information Protection Work?
The Azure Information Protection upgrades to MIP, including the unified labeling client, scanner, and SDK, are shown in the graphic below.
The common information protection stack used by AIP's universal labeling client is Microsoft Information Protection.
Client for Unified Labeling from AIP
The Azure Information Protection unified labeling client adds additional file types, as well as the File Explorer and PowerShell, to the labeling, classification, and protection features of Azure Information Protection.
AIP On-Premises Scanner
Administrators can scan their on-premises file repositories for sensitive content that needs to be tagged, categorised, and/or secured using the Azure Information Protection on-premises scanner.
The on-premises scanner is set up with the use of PowerShell cmdlets included with the unified labeling client, and it can be maintained with PowerShell and the Azure Information Protection area of the Azure portal.

Microsoft Information Protection SDK
The Microsoft Information Protection SDK allows third-party apps and services to use sensitivity labels. The SDK can be used by developers to create built-in functionality for labeling and protecting files.
- A line-of-business application assigns classification labels to exported files.
- CAD/CAM design applications incorporate built-in Microsoft Information Protection labeling.
- Cloud access security brokers or data loss prevention solutions analyze data encrypted with Azure Information Protection.
Why Does Your Organization Need Azure Information Protection?
If you operate in a Microsoft Office 365 environment, Azure Information Protection gives you a better awareness of where your content is dispersed and how it's utilized, as well as granular control over it. This level of visibility helps to:
- Prevent illicit modification, storage, and distribution of business-critical data.
- Unauthorized users viewing sensitive content is no longer a problem.
- Gain greater control of information by monitoring which users are interacting with content and how they are doing so.
- Meet regulatory data protection and compliance standards.
Azure Information Protection Benefits
Full control, no matter who has your documents or data
Even if your network is hacked or your files are stolen, no one can access the critical and confidential information contained within without the express authorization of the creator. Who has the authority to revoke all access or set an expiration date on all information if necessary?
No need to change the way you work
You can now deploy and safeguard your data and documents wherever they are, wherever they go, or whoever has them with Microsoft's Azure Information Protection (AIP) software without disturbing your firm's normal working procedures.
Real-time intelligence and information
Your papers and data are secure no matter where they are in the world, and our unique management dashboard allows you to see which teams or departments are transmitting or receiving critical material on a regular basis.
Easy for you to maintain and update
A trained data controller may now send out policy changes throughout your whole organization (using Microsoft Office 365) in less than one minute, thanks to the introduction of Microsoft Azure Information Protection.
Low cost of ownership
A single practitioner can implement AIP in the same way that it can be implemented across a global firm.
You need little more than Microsoft Office 365, and by utilizing implementation methodology you will be protected. Updates are deployed automatically over the cloud, and changes can be made by you, as your data policies and legislation change.
Govern and restrict
Microsoft Azure Information Protection allows you to fully control and restrict access to all of your company's internal and external correspondence, from creation to deletion, regardless of where it sits.
